Cluster Galaxy Populations from z = 0 . 33 − 0 . 83 : Characterizing Evolution with CL 1358 + 62

چکیده
We combine HSTWFPC mosaics of clusters at multiple redshifts with Keck LRIS spectroscopy to characterize different galaxy populations and how they evolve. By combining quantitative measurements of structural parameters with velocity dispersions, line indices, and morphological types, we attempt to establish links between ellipticals, S0’s, E+A’s, and later type galaxies. Here we focus on galaxies in CL1358+62, a massive cluster at z = 0.33.

Evolution of Galactic Disks in Clusters and the Eld at 0:1 < Z < 0:6 in the Cnoc Survey
Two-dimensional surface photometry is presented for a sample of 351 late-type galaxies with 0:12 < z < 0:65. These objects are drawn from the Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology (CNOC) cluster survey and are either spectroscopically con-rmed members of clusters at z = 0:23 (64 galaxies), 0:43 (45), and 0:55 (36) or eld galaxies with similar redshifts. Galaxies in the rich cluster Abell...

We examine the distribution of stellar masses of galaxies in MS 1054.4-0321 and CL 0152.7-1357, two X-ray-selected clusters of galaxies at z = 0.83. Our stellar mass estimates, from spectral energy distribution fitting, reproduce the dynamical masses as measured from velocity dispersions and halflight radii with a scatter of 0.2 dex in the mass for early-type galaxies. When we restrict our samp...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Stellar Populations in Intermediate Redshift Clusters
The M/L ratios and absorption line-strengths of distant cluster galaxies can be used to directly study their stellar populations, determine their redshift of formation, their scatter in ages, and any dependence of their ages on such internal properties such as velocity dispersion or mass. Comparing the zero-point the fundamental plane in the z = 0.33 cluster CL1358+62 to that in Coma, we conclu...
متن کاملThe Photometric Plane of Elliptical Galaxies
The Sérsic (r) index n of an elliptical galaxy (or bulge) has recently been shown to correlate strongly (r = 0.8) with a galaxy’s central velocity dispersion. This index could therefore prove extremely useful and cost-effective (in terms of both telescope time and data reduction) for many fields of extragalactic research. It is a purely photometric quantity which apparently not only traces the ...

We have used the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the HST to obtain optical imaging of a sample of 8 galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.8 < z < 1.3. The ACS data provides accurate photometry and the ACS high angular resolution makes it possible to obtain crucial morphological information of the cluster galaxy populations. These data are supported by X-ray observations and by ground bas...
